Tummy Tuck Surgery

The abdominal area is notoriously difficult to tone, especially if you’ve had kids. Pregnancy, age and genetics can contribute to a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone in the midsection, as well as the accumulation of localized fat deposits. Tummy tuck is designed to firm and tighten the midsection for a slimmer and more contoured appearance.

Tummy Tuck Candidates

You may be a candidate for tummy tuck surgery in Baltimore if you have loose, saggy skin and a protruding abdomen. This could be caused by pregnancy, the effects of aging or weight loss surgery that has left a lot of excess skin.

You should be in good physical health, not smoke and not have any uncontrolled medical issues that could raise your surgical risks. You should also have reasonable expectations of the procedure and an understanding of the possible , but rare, complications.

Your weight should be stable, and ideally, you should be at or close to your goal weight. If you have upcoming plans to become pregnant, it’s best to complete childbearing prior to your surgery.  Dr. Horowitz meets with all tummy tuck candidates during a surgical consultation to explain the procedure and discuss expectations and goals. He may discuss the possibility of combining tummy tuck with liposuction to the abdomen, flanks and back to improve the shape of your entire trunk, or if you are interested in reducing fat in other areas of your body (e.g., buttocks, thighs, arms). If you have pregnancy-related changes in your breasts (as well as your abdomen), Dr. Horowitz can perform combination abdominoplasty-breast lift or breast augmentation.

This is popularly referred to as a "mommy makeover."

The Surgical Procedure

Tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure that is performed at our surgical facility. Anesthesia is administered for your comfort. Dr. Horowitz will make a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen (just above the pubic area). This incision is low enough that any scarring will be just above the pubic area. Dr. Horowitz will remove excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen, and tighten the abdominal musculature. He may make an additional incision around the belly button and relocate it to a higher position on the abdomen. Then, he will re-drape the skin more tightly over the abdomen, close the incisions with absorbable sutures and apply surgical dressings. When appropriate, liposuction is performed to sculpt the contours of the abdomen, hips, buttocks and lower back.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Dr. Horowitz may perform mini tummy tuck on certain patients. Mini tummy tuck is a variation of traditional tummy tuck that focuses on improving the lower abdomen, beneath the navel. A single incision is made right above the pubic area, and abdominal skin laxity and protrusion are corrected. Dr. Horowitz will advise whether mini tummy tuck is an appropriate option for you during your initial consultation.

Recovering from Tummy Tuck

The first few days after tummy tuck surgery will be the most challenging. Your abdominal area will be sore, and you will have swelling and bruising. Oral pain medication can relieve any serious discomfort or pain. During the first few days of recovery, you should rest as much as possible and refrain from bending, lifting or straining.

Dr. Horowitz uses a long-acting local anesthetic during the surgery that will significantly decrease your pain for the first three days postoperatively.

Slowly, you can return to your regular activity level, but do not push your body before it feels ready. Baltimore tummy tuck surgeon Dr. Horowitz will meet with you several times for follow-up appointments to check your progress and clear you to return to work, exercise and your normal routine. Patients return to work when their pain allows, which is typically in one week. Heavy lifting and exercise can be resumed in four weeks.

Tummy Tuck Scars

The tummy tuck incisions will leave scars; however, they will sit low enough to be concealed beneath underwear or a bikini bottom. And, with the proper post-operative incision care, scarring will fade significantly. Dr. Horowitz’s patients agree that the aesthetic benefits of the procedure are well worth the (generally unnoticeable) scars.
